Joseph Murphy

Joe Murphy

Born on November 15, 1931, Joe was an avid fan of baseball and basketball and not only coached but also organized several youth teams. He was both a Police Officer and Volunteer Fireman in Hasbrouck Heights, NJ.  In 1964, Joe joined the Waterfront Commission Port Police. He received his Masters degree in Psychology at Manhattan College.

Taking Bagpipe lessons from Maurice Whalen, Joe picked up that goofy fingering method when playing the chanter. He joined the Band in the late 80's and was immediately accepted as a strong and confident musician despite "his way of fingering". It was a standing joke for us all to watch a rookie piper trying to follow Joe’s fingers and play along.

Joe would always say that the highlights in his life (before the Band) are his lovely wife Corrine, and his five children.  He was proud of his Irish Heritage and especially his membership in the Band.  He felt that the Band was his "second family", and his dream come true.

Joe, you were a dream come true for the Band.

May St. Patrick watch over him.
